Nestled in the historic core of Zagreb, this nearly 200 m² period apartment occupies part of a heritage building currently undergoing extensive reconstruction following earthquake damage. The project was commissioned by a young family of three with a clear and considered ambition: to preserve the original spatial logic and dignity of the apartment while carefully adapting it to the rhythms of contemporary family life.
The existing organization — remarkably intact over time — became the foundation of the design. Three interconnected salons forming the day zone were fully retained, accommodating the dining room, living area and kitchen within a continuous sequence of nearly 100 m². Rather than fragmenting the space, the intervention reinforces its inherent generosity, rhythm and sense of flow, allowing daily life to unfold naturally within the original architectural framework.
The more private part of the apartment, historically intended for service functions, was thoughtfully reinterpreted to meet the needs of the family. A master bedroom suite with a walk-in wardrobe was shaped as a calm and intimate retreat while one of the former salons was transformed into a child’s room — a space defined by volume, layered use and a quiet sense of playfulness.
The clients’ deep appreciation for late 19th-century architecture, combined with a refined sensitivity to color, tactile surfaces and contemporary materials, became a key driver of the project. Rather than restoring the apartment to a nostalgic image of the past, the interior embraces a deliberate contrast — introducing bold palettes, rich textures and contemporary elements within the historic envelope, allowing the old and the new to coexist in a carefully balanced dialogue.
The result is a distinctive and deeply personal home: a contemporary family apartment defined by character, warmth and individuality, where historic structure and modern expression meet in quiet harmony. The project stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of heritage spaces — not through imitation, but through thoughtful reinterpretation shaped around the lives unfolding within them.
